Who can apply for the J-1 visa in America?

Foreign nationals who want to enter America to participate in work or study based exchange programs can get J-1 visa. This program must be promoted by government or private sector. This non-immigrant visa is issued to the people who will be participating in various programs promoting cultural exchange between countries. It also approves if the foreign national will get training in medical or business fields.

It is issued to different people from various categories. In the private sector, these categories are alien physician, intern, student of secondary school, trainee, camp counselor in summer camps, teacher or flight training. In the government sector, categories are international or government visitor, short-term scholar, specialist, student of college or university, professor and research scholar.

They can stay in the America till the period of their program but they can extend their stay for 30 more days. It is called the grace period in which they must get prepared for leaving country. If they leave United States during this grace period, they cannot reenter with this visa.

J-1 visa holders also pay some taxes like federal insurance contributions act (FICA) taxes. It is for social security and Medicare. For the dependents (spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21) of J-1 holders J-2 Visa is provided. These dependents cannot work in America without employment authorization document issued from the Department of Homeland Security.
